Location

With nearly 16 square miles, Delray Beach is located along the coast, in the southern portion of Palm Beach County, Florida.  The area includes more than 60,000 residents, and is officially part of the metropolitan area of Miami.  With four miles of beach along the Atlantic Ocean, Delray Beach is just north of Boca Raton and Highland Beach, and south of Boynton Beach and Gulf Stream.  It is east of US Route 1, on the barrier island.  Just west of city limits, the area is known as West Delray, and is in unincorporated Palm Beach County.  The downtown area of Delray Beach extends east to the Atlantic Ocean, and west to I-95, both north and south of Atlantic Avenue.  With average winter temperatures in the 60s, and summer temperatures in the 80s, Delray Beach capitalizes on its cool ocean breezes throughout the year.

Communities

Delray Beach is a booming real estate market, with young professionals leading the charge.  The area is truly a pedestrian friendly community, with many homeowners trying to get as close as possible to Atlantic Avenue and the beach.  Home prices, not surprisingly, increase the closer you are to the water.  The beauty of “old Florida” is still apparent, though.  While there are some multi-million dollar estates right on the water, there are also various well-preserved homes dating back to the 1950s, and condominiums available for purchase.  Pineapple Grove is a trendy, mixed-use community, with condominiums and townhomes mixed in with retail shops and restaurants.  Lake Ida is another hot community, with older homes undergoing major upgrades.  The area is close to the city and beach, but filled with lakes, parks and the natural beauty of South Florida.  Find larger homes in Mizner County Club and Saturnia Isles to the west.  Many of the neighborhoods in Delray Beach are designated as historic districts, and every effort is being made to preserve their unmistakable charm.  There are also communities like The Four Seasons, which are designed specifically for active adults, with resort-level amenities in mind.  

Things to Do

The Delray Beach Tennis Center regularly brings in both visitors and business to the area.  The site has hosted several international events, such as the Fed Cup, Davis Cup and the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.  The ATP World Tour 250 series is also held every year in the community, and helped with Delray Beach’s nomination as one of the top tennis towns in the entire nation.  In fact, although golfing is big in Palm Beach County, tennis is top-notch for Delray Beach.  The Downtown Roundabout helps residents, and tourists, get around the area of downtown.  The free shuttle includes 22 stops, operating every day of the week.  The Downtown Delray Beach Arts District was recently expanded, featuring cultural organizations and galleries in South Florida.  As well, the area features the Delray Beach Center for the Arts, including the Cornell Museum of Art and American Culture.  This helped give the area a recent economic and cultural boost.  The Crest Theatre brings in live musicals and other entertainment throughout the year.  The Sandoway House Nature Center gives a front row seat to native animals, plants, and South Florida’s marine life.  The beachfront property is on the National Register of Historic Places.  For outdoor enthusiasts, Delray Beach has two miles of public beaches.  The area is also a prime spot for scuba diving and snorkeling.  As for golf, Delray Beach Golf Club is a public,18-hole par 72 course.  It is considered one of the best city-owned courses in the area, and was recently named one of the best values in golf courses by Golf Magazine.  Lakeview Golf Course is a par 60, 18-hole course, which is also open to the public.  As well, there are dozens of other public and private golf courses located across the area of Palm Beach County.

Shopping

Shoppers in Downtown Delray Beach enjoy a unique mix of retailers with district offerings.  Expect to also find some boutique stores in the area featuring the latest designs and fashions.  Atlantic Avenue is the main street running through Downtown Delray Beach all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.  If features locally made art pieces, and one-of-a-kind shops.  Just off Atlantic Avenue, is where you will find Pineapple Grove.  While more casual, the area features some unique shops and artwork.  Delray Marketplace is one of the newest shopping venues in the area, featuring retails shops, restaurants and more.  For more traditional shopping malls, head to nearby Palm Beach to the north, or nearby Boca Raton to the south.  As for antiques, you will find them too, at the Atlantic Antique Merchant Mall.  This Delray Beach destination features more than 100 antique vendors.  For fresh produce and other items, head to the Delray GreenMarket for much of the year.

Tourism plays a large part in the local economy of Delray Beach.  As for the top employer in the area, that honor belongs to Delray Medical Center and Publix.
